  Combinatorics and Chemoenzymatics
Article by Chokhawala et al.
Posted: 8/27/2008

Sialic acids, which reside on the surface of many cell types, mediate various types of cell–cell interactions, including those involved in the immune response, host–pathogen interactions, and cancer metastasis. The numerous modifications found on sialic acids, such as acetylation and sulfation, coupled with challenges associated with oligosaccharide synthesis, complicate investigations into how sialic-acid-containing glycans interact with their various receptors. Chokhawala et al. now present a combinatorial chemoenzymatic method that facilitates the creation and characterization of sialic-acid-containing biomolecules.

  Nascent Chain Dynamics
Article by Ellis et al.
Posted: 8/22/2008

As a polypeptide chain materializes from the ribosome, a functional protein results only if the polypeptide folds correctly. Little is known, however, about the dynamics of nascent chains while they are still bound to the ribosome. Ellis et al. use dynamic fluorescence depolarization, a technique that enables discrimination of different types of molecular motion, to explore movement of nascent chains as they emerge from the ribosomal tunnel.

  ABOUT THE JOURNAL
  Rapid Publication

From submission to acceptance in an average of just 8 weeks, and posting to the Web soon thereafter, ACS Chemical Biology offers a distinct advantage to authors in decisiveness and dissemination, making research available to the international audience as an Article ASAP (As Soon As Publishable).

ACS now offers NIH-funded authors two options by which to fulfill the NIH Public Access policy requirement of manuscript deposit. Read more>>>

CURRENT QUESTIONS
What advice do you have to those who want to include HTS into a grant but want to still appear to be “hypothesis-driven”?
JI: The investigator should propose HTS as a means to a project goal, a component of a grant that might be focused on generating tool compounds, identifying new targets, etc. HTS is an approach like... Read more>>>
